Fernham treasure hunt 2006

It was a history lesson, a chance to sneak around bits of the village never before seen, and a brain-teaser. It was the 2006 Fernham treasure hunt on Sunday, 9 July.

Undaunted by the wind and the odd shower, 16 teams walked from one end of the village to the other - and often back again! - in pursuit of collectables and answers. Teams with names such as The People Who Went To The Palace, The Brain Bandits, Flippin' Fernham, and (a very hopeful) The Winning Team spent a good 90 minutes scouring the village's side streets, the church, the village pump and the green for some rather elusive answers.

Quiz forms were swapped at The Woodman, and scored - in some cases, somewhat dubiously (the answer to the question about wells was probably pretty dubious too, the organisers will now admit, sheepishly). The initial winners - The Tornado Timms family - lost their first place on a recount to combined first and second place winners, The Cool Campers (Gavin, Mim, B, and children) and The Green machine (Steve, Anna, Eloise and Maddy Green). The Timms family were rather relieved - as the winners get the dubious honour of organising next year's treasure hunt.

The winners also received champagne and chocolates, with chocolates also for second place, and for third place, which went to the Fabulous Baker Square Boys (aka Brian, Carol, Alex and James Heathcote).

Afterwards, there was a well-attended and very merry Bring A Dish lunch in the garden at Jayne and Ben's house.

The treasure hunt raised Ł80 for plants for the new village playground. The joint organisers, Jan Egginton and Jayne Rice, thank everyone for taking part - and being such good sports!
