It was something of a miracle. It had rained much of the week before the big night, and rained while we waited, huddled under trees, for the minibus to arrive to transport us to this annual event at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham. And the heavens opened in a heavy, thunderous downpour only moments after the Music and Fireworks evening ended. But in between, it was dry and pleasant - and something of a real summer's evening!
It was an excellent turnout from the village, with everyone pitching in with food to provide a wonderful shared picnic buffet. The music was marvellous, and there was plenty of spectacle from parachutists to a grand fireworks display.
That two-hour window of Non-Rain seemed even more miraculous 24 hours later - when everyone was struggling through the infamous 21 July floods, trying to get home from work, from school, from anywhere!
