Fernham is a picturesque Oxfordshire village in the Vale of the White Horse with views of Uffington White Horse, the oldest hill-carved horse in the country.
The village has more than 80 houses, three farms, a church, a pub, two village greens, a village pump and a children's play park.
Though Fernham is small, the community spirit in Fernham is very strong and is often one of the reasons people choose to live here.
Because Fernham is such a vibrant community, we are now converting St. John's Church, one of only two public buildings in the village, to make it a more comfortable place for worship and to double as a community centre.
Building work began in January, after a tremendous fundraising effort spearheaded by Project Inspire and involving the entire village. Through a combination of grants, events, donations and money from the People's Millions, we have raised most of the money.
The conversion is on course for completion by the end of June 2009. A separate project to replace the roof, funded by English Heritage, will follow.
By November 2009, we should have a wonderful building for the use of our village and neighbouring communities.
Fernham vicar, The Rev. Richard Hancock, will be on pilgrimage to Santiago from June to September 2009, raising money for Leukamia Research.
The pews removed from St. John's Church are available for purchase at £200 ono.
