Fernham Oxfordshire

Halloween, 31 October 2006

On a dark dark night, in a dark dark village, a group of skeletons, witches, ghouls, a pumpkin, a chap having a bad hair day, and even Death himself, complete with scythe, roamed Fernham in search of chocolate and sweeties.

We gave more than a dozen households a fright - and a couple of families answered the door with scarier masks than their visitors! There were pumpkins on many doorsteps - and a particularly monstrous one at Akiko and Russell's house. Some homes were decorated with all manner of scary things - either that or they'd forgotten to dust.

After making the rounds, two further treats lay in store for the children and accompanying parents. First, we were all welcomed into the suddenly gothic interior of B's home for soft drinks, Bloody Marys, and mulled wine that made the very air intoxicating. Then, we hightailed it over to the pub, where a particularly macabre witch (Kay, you were splendid!) lay in wait in hand out sweets to fatten the children up for her cauldron.

It was a wonderful and mostly incident-free night, and many thanks to everyone who welcomed our visitations.
